Any suggestions?

I'm in the market for a camera but don't know if i want an SLR or a regular digicam. I love taking pictures and I would love to take it another step and invest in an SLR. However, I want to have something that I can also take to events such as weddings, parties, birthdays, etc. I can't afford two cameras so I wanted to know people's opinions on what they think is good (I.e. small SLR's--if that exists--or poweful digicams). My bugedt is probably around $600.
