I bought my wife a Canon Ixus 285HS because I read the macro was so good.
It is not. Yes, it has a 1 cm distance macro function, but that is of no use when you try to shoot insects (at 1 cm the bug is usuallly gone if it's alive). When zooming in in macro modus, the thing doesn't focus anymore.

Her previous camera was an Ixus 980 with a macro that worked like a dream. Hence my thought buying her the 285 was a safe bet.

My idea is to return the 285 and get her a Canon SX720 powershot.

My question: Has anyone here had any experience with the SX720 and specially with it's macro function?

Thanks in advance, Jeroen

I have no experience with the SX720, but if you want a good camera for
macro, take a look at the Panasonic FZ200.
Here you find some macro pics with the FZ200.

And you can use f.i. Raynox close-up lenses, to go even closer.

Thanks for your reply.

The Panasonic is too big and too heavy for her. She needs a light camera because she has arthrosis in her hands and it has to fit into a handbag.

I have always been very happy with Canon. If the macro of the SX720 can match the old 980 (that broke down after 7 years and thousands of shots), it is fine.

Anyone with any hands on experience for the SX720? I would appreciate it very much :)

Here you find some macro shots with the SX720 HS.
