Aperture on P&S & SLR

Hi everyone,
If a P&S camera has an aperture of 2.8 and a DSLR lens (Canon L Series) has 2.8, the latter will let in more light overall, right?

In the sense that a football field gets more water than a parking spot in the same rain, yes.
