Auto Lock Ring?

Hi,

In the photo below - those buttons (there are 3, 2 not shown) I have the arrow pointing to - I've been able to determine that they are an Auto Lock system. How are they used? What sort of scenario would require their use.

There is one on my 80-200mm and I have no idea how to use or why.

He did! Cool - thanks! Seems to be a way to freeze the AF for recomposing or maybe even target focusing. Does feel a bit awkward to me as I try to use. Using it and zooming would be right out of question without some practice!

Some lenses can be locked to prevent lens creep. So possibly one of your buttons is for that. Just a guess. The Nikon 18-200 doesn't have it but desperately needs it and my Tamron 17-50 has it and doesn't need it.
