Auto-Stabilizer?

Alright so my camera has an auto stabilizer and I was just wondering if there is a downside to using this. Why wouldnt it just be automatically on at all times?

You don't want it turned on when the camera is perfectly stationary, such as on a tripod or something else like a rock. If you keep it on while on a tripod it will still compensate for handshake, except the handshake is non-existent, so it can actually add blur to a photo.
