These aren't horrible, not at all! There are some ways they can be improved, most already mentioned above.
One thing that sticks out to me is the difference in color tone. Were you going for black and white in both? The first seems to have a bit of a sepia tone. If that's what you intended, ok, but it might be something you didn't notice. It's nice to have photos of a "set" to be processed the same way, especially if the person is displaying them (wall, album, etc) together.
