So I'm totally new to photography and am looking for feedback on a picture I took of my son today.

I'm sure there are those who are more experienced and skilled at portraiture who can weigh in about the lighting. For me, the overall composition is balanced, there's good eye contact and focus. I just wish the head weren't cut off.

i like the shot, although i think i would have backed things up a bit and gotten the kids whole head in the frame. otherwise, nicely posed.
seems a little flat on the color, kids kinda greyish.
a quick edit in LR to warm things up a tad and a little vibrance.

I am with the others. The number one mistake new photographers make today is not overshooting for print. That is the mistake you made here. If you printed this to an 11X14 you would be in trouble. Also the color is flat and that is due to the lighting (or lack thereof). Your EXIF data says you used flash but there is no vibrancy in the image and usually a properly used flash will bring that out. Pixmedic's remix looks better but the lighting still doesn't jazz me...

I am with pixmedic on the C&C. Your son is very cute. :)
