I am buying a digital slr in the 500-600 range in the coming weeks and I was wondering, are there any brands that I should or shoud NOT buy, why?

Unless I am unaware of generic DSLRs, you should be safe with anything. Canon and Nikon are the two biggest and therefore have the most support for things like lenses and accessories, but Samsung, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, or Leica are all safe bets as far as getting a quality camera.

You can buy a Nikon D40 or D50 with an 18-55mm kit lens for give or take that much.

Some brands you should buy: Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung (relabelled Pentaxes), Sony (or Konica-Minolta). Some brands you should not buy: None that I know of. Note those brands were in alphabetical order, not any order of preference. There is nothing inherently superior or inferior with the products of any brand. It's down to your own priorities and personal preference as to which is a better camera, a better lens, a better system. I know you mentioned in another post that it's hard for you to get to a camera shop, but really I would suggest you do that.
