Hi, I'm new to Photgraphy and am gettin a Nikon D3100 this holiday. I'm curious what would be the best lense for to do full body shots? Also any explanation of why said lense is good, and a basic explanation of what it all means would be much appreciated!

Thank you! :)

The best lens is the one that gets the job done. There is no such thing as just a "best lens." The concept of what works is in part situation dependent. I've used a 50mm and a 400 mm for full body shots. Difference in using the two............working distance. If there was one best, then there would be no need for a DSLR.

Here is a good set of tutorials to start with. Digital Photography Tutorials

Different lenses have different "flavours" you need to think about what youre cooking to really know what the best lens is.

but since you sound new at photography, just know the kit lens is great to start out with

There is no such thing a THE 'best' lens. If there was, it would be the only one on the market.
