Just purchased a D90 with the Nikkor 1.8D 50mm (I'm very happy since that lens has been on my wish list for a while). But it doesn't come with the kit lens, I was wondering if you guys know of a very good standard lens that would work well with the D90 for £200 ($300) or under. I don't mind if it's used.

I was looking at the Tamron/N SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8

Here's a website that has a bunch of reviews: Nikon Field Flash Digital Guide photography by Thom Hogan.

If you don't mind me asking - why didn't you buy the 18 - 105 kit lens when you bought the camera along with the 50mm? From what I've read it isn't a bad lens and it is seems to be an affordable alternative for that zoom range.

I would look for either the Nikon 18-105 as Vinny mentioned, or the Nikon 18-70; both a bit slower than the Tamron, but I think you'd appreciate the extra reach.

In that case I would look for a second-hand 18-70; the build quality is less than stellar, but optically it's an excellent lens, and one which I still use frequently on my APS-C DSLR.
