we have a project coming up soon for black and white photography. i was thinking of purchasing a red #25 filter and possibly a green filter.

is there anything i need to know about these filters? like will i have to certain make f-stop adjustments in order to compensate for having them on? thanks.

If your camera has a built-in meter (any modern camera)...then the camera will make the adjustment for the amount of light getting into the lens. The camera can't tell weather it's got a filter on, or if it's just darker...all it knows is how much light is getting into the lens and to the meter.

So unless you are using a hand held meter...you do not need to make any adjustments to exposure for the filter.
