Do you guys have any tips/tricks involving book keeping in regards to a photography business? Should I use software (quickbooks, or just excel), or do it on paper ledgers? Is there any freeware/software I should know about that would help me?

Pretty much just looking for wisdom from some of the more experienced photogs on here...

I use the most basic version of quickbooks. It was free with something I bought.

Quickbooks is great if you are good at doing your books by yourself. If not, shop around for an accountant.

I'm not great at doing my books by myself, however an accountant isn't in the budget yet and wont be for at least a year or two. So I'm looking for anything that can make my life easier in the meantime...

I was actually surprised about how affordable an accountant was. When we started our business we didn't think we had the budget for an accountant either, so I did it myself. I wish now that we had gone with a professional from the start.

We use Xero.com, which is subscription based. It's a nice online app but I'd rather purchase Quickbooks or something similar and save the $20/month. My partner on the other hand, really likes Xero and doesn't mind paying the monthly fee.
