At one time we were getting a couple a month of them in our coverage district. We called them "friction fires", created by the loan papers and insurance papers rubbing together. :aiwebs_016:

I guess they were thoughtful enough to burn it on the grass and not in the bush where it would spread.

Not heard that term before but makes sense. Where I used to live there was some waste land, there were reg car fires on a Saturday night there. Kids steal a car ride around causing havoc then burn the car.
 
did the fire dept use this as a training method...
 
@Original katomi there was an individual that who for a fee would steal the car and burn it for the owner. They finally caught him, when he made a mistake starting the fire. He put a container of flammable liquid in the floorboard, lit it and shut the door. However, he forgot to roll down the windows, so the fire quickly used up the oxygen and extinguished itself. Police were able to pull enough fingerprints to identify the guy.
