Buying a new camera

I have a Kodak EasyShare C300 digital camera right now. It's definitely not something I feel that I could use to take more professional-looking pictures. I wanted to ask, what cameras would you all recommend I take a look at? It seems like the only good cameras are the really expensive ones. Money is something that I do not have . I've looked at the Nikon CoolPix L1 and L3 and they're both under $300 but I'm not too sure if I'd be happy with those or not. No other cameras that are in my price range have caught my eye yet. So, any thoughts?
