C&C child photographs

I've took the advice from my last post and hopefully it shows? I've also worked on the editing part of my photography.

Please, be honest... I have a friend who wants me to take her children's pictures and would like to do a good job for her.... THANKS!!

first thing i think is do away with the water marks.... or at least put it at the bottom. its distracting from the photos.

I know it's distracting... but only one of those kiddos is mine, so since this is a public forum I figured I'd keep them on there.

nothing to critique really. You really make something happen with the colors of the childrens eyes. very interesting child photography.

I think they are all pretty good, but IMO, the first pic is the best.

How long have you been shooting for?

Thanks for the compliments. I've had my camera since Mother's Day, so I haven't been shooting for very long at all. But I LOVE it and hoping to improve.

I don't even know enough to give any C/C on this board, but hopefully will get the hang of everything soon.

Btw, it's a Nikon D40, with the standard lens.

I guess I'll be the honest one with c&c (or the one that knows).

1, 4, and 9 are too bad overexposed. Would have been better to drop exposure down and use a slight amount of fill flash. By slight I mean, dial it down to around -2 Flash Comp give or take a bit.

In general, be careful not to go overboard with sharpening the eyes. Number
2 and number 5 (moreso in 2), the eyes are just plain out of focus and sharpening them in post just makes them look odd since they aren't in focus in the first place.....almost inhances the blur.

Some of them have really flat lighting (particularly 3 and 5)...not much you can do with that unless you want to get a new flash and/or experiment with some off camera flash (not as easy with your D40 as with a Nikon model that has CLS).

Of this bunch, number 6 is really great. Wonderful lighting and focus is spot on...eye sharpening is just right too. Number 8 isn't that bad either...just a little too much flash causing her to get washed out and focus was off just a hair it looks like (on my screen at least).

Oh, and in the future, try to not post so many pictures in one thread. It makes it really hard to give c&c. Most say limit to 3...I personally have no problem with about 5-6 photos but more than that and it's a pain scrolling back up to see which number it was. I wasn't going to reply because of that (and others won't as well), but I remembered that I gave you c&c once before and you were very appreciated despite my brutal honesty...that's why I took the time in this thread.

I find the post processing on the eyes is way too heavy. It doesn't match the kids. I'm all for some touching up and sharpening, but I think its overboard, specially in 2...the kid looks possessed.

I like the overall compositions of the shots

I like the photographs but the eyes make me think they aren't real children.

(I've noticed this numerous places lately so maybe it is a trend, but to me personally it makes the kids look like aliens or vampires or something)

Thanks for all the CC! Especially the detailed ones. I really DO appreciate it. I'll stick with the 3 pics or less rule from now on, too.

My husband was very freaked out by the blue eyed pics... guess he was right on that one. Perhaps I went a bit overboard while editing.... I'll try to make them more human-like.

Does PP mean photo processing? If so, I used photoshop, and some actions I found online. Still experimenting with all that.

I think you did a fantastic job. I don't know much about all this yet, still learning but I do think they look great. I have to agree with some of the previous posts, maybe decrease the opacity on the eyes a bit.... esp #2 and 5.
