This picture didn't come out as sharp as I had expected. I'm thining it may be an ISO issue. It was set at 2000 for some reason (I set it that way at some point most likely not knowing what I was doing and forgot to change it). Is that all I did wrong?

Iso is for light... but you will get noise with higher ISO.

When shooting outside, specially sunny days, try keeping your ISO lower than 800. Cute little girl btw.

You can set up your D5000 so the ISO sensitivity displays in the viewfinder (page 6 and page 158 of your user's manual), and you can configure the Fn button so you can use the command wheel to change the ISO so you don't need to take your eye away from the viewfinder and menu dive to make the adjustment. (page 163 of your user's manual).
