Something a little more wide/versatile might be better. What about something like the Tokina 11-16?

You can use any lens to shoot, sometimes it means moving closer( not an option shooting the sky) or moving back if the lens is too long. Photography, especially at the level you seem to be working at is a matter of learning, trying different things, making mistakes and learning from them. You're working in a region of the world that allows you the opportunity of seeing and working in a place with beauty and tragic images, work with all you see. Talk to some other photographers that are working there, I imagine some of the big agencies are there in some capacity, maybe there is a in for you with them, even on a learning basis.
