Actually the candy apples had been left outside in the rain so that the candy had washed off, leaving the apples sitting in a pool of red water. Then the yellowjackets came, as if to a pool party.

They also enjoyed the red candy flavored pool the apples were sitting in.

Did all of them SURVIVE the red-candy-pool?
It must have contained some very sticky "water"!
At first, however, it seems like they not only came ... they also sent out invitations to their friends so MORE and MORE of them arrived. Wow!
Nice close-ups of a very interesting subject ... and I like the amount of red that contrasts with the yellow/black of the wasps!

I think my two favourites are the first of the apple series and the first of the candy-water series.

Yes, they would wiggle around in the water a bit, and as you can see in the one pic they even seemed to fight one another, but I never saw any of them drown so they were managing to get back out. It rained again, decent downpour, and I was surprised to see that there were still yellowjackets buzzing around the apples during the rain.
