Cannon EOS G2- good camera?

Christmas is coming up and I'm looking for a replacement for my old Ricoh camera. It has a Pentax mount and I was thinking of getting something like a Pentax ZX-60 so that I can re-use the quantaray 100-300mm AF lense that I got 9 months ago. However, in reading what limited reviews I can find the ZX-60 doesn't look very intrigueing. as a result I am looking at the cannon EOS G2 with Sigma 2 lense kit. Is this a good, stable, worry-free camera for a ameture photographer?
