Canon 28-80mm lens with hood?

Is there something I'm missing here?

I can't fit my Cokin filter holder or a 58mm thread hood to my 28-80mm USM lens because when the zoom is operated the filter thread on the lens slides into the lens body.

With the filter holder or hood attatched it is no longer possible for the zoom to work! (stuck at either 28mm or 80mm!)

Is there an adapter/thread extender I can get to work around this problem?
