I have decided to get a Canon 50mm f1.4 lens. I am open to purchasing a used lens. A lot of the reviews I looked at refer to 'new Gaussian Optics'. Does anyone know when this lens got these new Gaussian optics. If I look to purchase a used lens I am wondering how far back can I go in terms of the year of manufacture. Also which is better used vs new?

To the best of my knowledge there is only one version of the Canon EF 50mm 1.4, and it's been around since the 90s. Despite it's age, it still outperforms many of the new 50s and is a nice lens. I've heard that the USM motor in it is different than the one used in newer lens designs, but it's still a nice lens. I wouldn't have any problem purchasing this lens used, as long as the savings was significant enough and you were confident that it's in good shape. If you buy new you get a warranty, but, whether or not that's worth it depends on the price difference.
