Canon and image stabilization

I would like to start off by thanking everyone who has posted. The response was greater than I had expected. Your thoughts and comments have helped me to finally come to a decision (I think :lmao.

I am going to go with the Canon XT or the XTi (depending on my finances). I'm going to buy the body only and "borrow" an EF lens that my brother in law has for his 35 mm Canon EOS (I wonder if he'll notice that they are missing). Once the new cheaper Canon EF-S 18-55 lens with IS, is available, I'll pick one up (provided the reviews are good).

At this point I don't see myself getting a telephoto lens with IS since I will probably be using a tripod. I think it will be better to just put the money towards better glass. I'm also thinking of trying my luck with second hand lenses, not sure yet.

My next step is to research lenses.
