Canon i9900 printing issue

I have a Canon i9900 photo printer, the prints turn out great except for two issues. It seems to blow highlights out a bit, its not that noticable until I try to print shots with fairly intense directional lighting, then I get an overly dark side and a side with blown out highlights, it still looks decent but it's definitally noticable when comparing it to the monitor. Also occasionally I'll get a saturation increase (looks like it's across the board). This occurs on canon photo paper plus glossy and canon photo paper pro.

I have not synced my monitor color to my printer, could this be the issue? If so how do I go about doing this?
