Canon SD450 good choice for amatuer photographer?

I have been doing 35 mm black and white photography for a while and would like to get a new digital camera that could be used for both P&S and art purposes. I like to take a range of different subject matters and hope that my digital camera would work well for all of them. I like the manual features, even if they do operate differently on digital than they do on the film camera, like the person at the store told me. He recommended the Canon Powershot SD 450 ELPH as a great option. I would love peoples' opinions on this camera and whether it really is the best for my purposes.
