Hi all

I have a 50mm f1.8 and an old 35-105 f3.5/4.5 lens
I'm going on vacation and wonder if the group thinks I should have a better lens
I'm a total newbie and would hate to ruin a vacation because I don't have a good lens

Opinions please?

Thanks

Mark

I wouldn't worry about it, your lenses are fine.

One concern is that your widest/shortest focal length is only 35mm. That is not very wide on your camera.

I'd suggest finding something like an 18-55mm. That is the typical lens that usually comes with that camera. You should be able to find a used one, for a very good price.

What aperture should I look for?

What would this cost ?
Any specific recommendations ?

Thanks

I'm inclined to agree - if you want to take images of landscapes, the lack of width on your lenses is likely to be frustrating.

If you're on a budget, the 18-55 (any Canon version) would serve you well - I picked one up three years ago for only 50 pounds. For shooting landscapes, the maximum aperture is not so important as you'd be using it in the f/11 to f/22 range anyway.

If money's not such an issue, something like the 24mm prime, 20mm prime or 10-22mm zoom may be worth considering.

You won't ruin the vacation because of your camera equipment (unless YOU let yourself get frustrated with it). The first year I had a D-SLR, I only used a 50mm/1.8 lens. I had great images from one overseas trip with only a 28mm/2.8 lens, and on another I only had the camera on my phone and one of my images from that trip is among my all-time favourites.

Investing time in practice and learning about photography (particularly things like composition) is probably more likely to improve the images you get than investing in equipment.

This is sage advice.

Yes, your T4i is a great camera, no worries there.

It's just that the 35-105 lens was originally meant for 35mm film cameras, and those cameras will 'see' a wider view than yours.
That is why the typical lens, for a camera like yours, is 18-55mm.

I would think you could find a used Canon EF-S 18-55mm for $50-$100.

I'm trying to learn.

Is my T4i ok?

Geeze man, stay away from the salesmen. :D

I'm sure you'll do just fine with your pics, but on the odd chance they turn out like crap, I can assure you the T4i is not the problem.

Good luck

Hey guys I know it's me that's the problem

Just wanted your thoughts on the camera also!

A good walking around lens is the 40mm STM pancake since it is small & lightweight.

I want to echo the 18-55. You might want to invest in a light tripod.
