Clever tripod alternatives?

I have a very small C-clamp type clamp that has a locking, rotating 1/4 by 20 thread...it will mount to doors and desktops and table tops. On top of the 1/4x20 thread I have mounted a very small ball head, mostly to mount off-camera flashes to found objects. I believe I bought it from the old Dot-Line company's product catalogue. It is strong enough to handle a medium to lightweight camera and lens combo.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to look into that, especially since it could be useful for, well, what its meant for. I wish I had more time to try to put something together.
