Color gel covers for flash

Alot of times when I take a picture in a room where the lighting has a yellow tint from the lighting would it help to use a color over the flash of the tint of the room lighting? Am I understanding this right to use a gel color the same as the room lighting? So if the room has a yellow tint a yellow gel cover would take that away? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't actually "take it away", but your camera/flash combo will communicate the new WB based on the color of the lighting.

You could do the same thing by using a custom white balance. Do that in case you don't have the system that uses colored gels.
