what is the fastest compact flash memory card?

I've heard Lexar and also sandisk...

any thoughts?

I have a D200 by the way

UDMA Lexar's. But I don't think the D200 is compatible with them. I know the D300 is, but I don't know about the D200.

dont worry about it...

grab a 4gb sandisk extreme III and you wont notice a difference with anything else...

i just got this in my new d200 and its plenty fast

i might get hounded for this but kingston is considered lower quality (ducks)... Its like comparing memorex MP3 players to ipods or zunes (ducks again)

I was more comparing the upper sandisks to lexars... wont see a huge or noticable difference i wouldnt think... In my D50 i didnt notice a difference between my regular sandisk and my ultra 2

hound hound :)

Kingston is a famous manufacturer of computer memory. They've been building memory for a while and they are considered one of the really good brands for such things. My computer is running with one of their memory chips.

As for Compact Flash, I personally gravitate around SanDisk as they are the ones who pioneered the CF format. I have also used Lexar and they seem pretty good as well - one of their SD cards outlived my previous camera and was purchased shortly after it.

The fastest CF right now is 300x. The SanDisk Extreme III is exactly that. I can't comment on how much faster it is in a digital camera, this depends on your camera as well.

ok ok yeti, i trust kingston ram... would never use jump drives or memory cards though.

and i guess the extreme III, if they are 300x, are def the way to go

sandisk extremeIII is far from the fastest on the market. Extreme IV is 40mb/s and Sandisks Ducati edition is 45mb/s So to say that the extreme III at 20mb/s is the fastest and wont make a difference from 45MB/s is crazy. There is a difference not only in how fast it saves the picture in your camrea but also how fast it uploads to your computer. If you have the equipment to keep up with it. one company makes a 60mb/s CF also I don't know if there is faster than that.

in the lab, yes 40mb/s is faster than 20mb/s... i just think as far as your camera saving this it is the same.. my photos are not 20mb so either way i am not reaching the limit.

this is real world application...... will you notice the difference if i run past you faster than your eye can notice the first time, and then 2x that speed the next?

good point though and clarification

thanks for your comment

I heard somewhere, I think my local camera shop that the Lexar 300x would not work to the highest potential with the D200 camera.

Right now I would say it is a debate for me: either the 8GB Extreme III sandisk, or the 4GB Lexar?

Ok so what your saying is a dodge Viper and a ford escort are both the same in speed! they both can go 60mph but the Viper can get to it 5x faster than the escort! just cause your pictures aren't 20mb doesn't mean that is how long it takes to record. So 300x write speed is the exact same as a 266x? that is what you are saying. No it's not it is 2 times faster at recording information than 133x. It doesn't matter if your recording 1mb or 40mb its a speed just like a car

I see your point :) but i feel you may have misunderstood my reference.

At those speeds, i dont think one would notice the difference in "in camera write speed"

In my eyes, regardless if i was using the sandisk "normal" or the ultra 2, i could not tell a difference from the time i took the photo to the time the light went off informing me that the memory was saved. so from using one card, that to me, seems instantaneous to another that is instantaneous "x2" is still just that. Instantaneous.

that and partly because im too cheap to buy the fastest cards as long as i can still get the 5fps

Yeah, what he was saying is that the camera can't write faster than 20mb/s so after that point there is no difference. It'd be like saying the dodge viper and the Escort are both gonig to go through an automated car wash. the viper may be 1000X faster, but the car wash will still take as long.

READ speed is a different story however. Plug a 40mb/s card into a firewire 800 card reader uploading to a SSD and you won't be waiting long.
