I freely admit to to being a Photoshop neophyte, but I need some help here, with, what for me is a challenge: I have an image where I need to produce a gradient which goes from solid black at one end to clear (that is the original image is completely visible) at the other. I've gone through the help files and on-line tutorials and more confused than ever.

Have you looked into Gradient maps at all? There should be a black to transparent preset...

In the layers pallet, click the new layer button and choose gradient. You will have options for radial or linear and you should be able to choose various color options...as well as black to white and black to clear. Should be pretty straight forward from there.

You can also use the gradient tool from the tool pallet on a new layer. By default the setting will be foreground color to transparency. In the screenshot mine is set to white right now, you'd just set it to black.
