Anyone know why the AF assist on the D300 only works in AF-S mode. I shoot action in dim to almost no light but need the speed of my AF-C I am using either a Metz 70-Mz5, or a 58AF-1 the AF will only work with the 58. Does anyone know if a different flash will illuminate for AF focus in AF-C mode

I suspect that the AF illuminator cannot stay lit in AF-C mode because there is the potential to cast unwanted light on your photos. Because the camera is constantly adjusting focus in AF-C mode, the AF illuminator would need to be on constantly, too.

OEM flashes usually have the infra red assist, right?

I suspect that the 58 AF-1 does as well being a shoe mount.

I'm not familiar with the 70 but you might check that the camera module is set up to use it's infra red as well. If you aren't using a module with the 70 then there's your problem.

The AF illuminator only works in AF-S, it doesn't matter what flash you have on.
