Hello,

My name is Branko and I have just started interesting in photography. I want to buy dSLR camera and i really can`t tell which is better. I have on my mind two options:
1. Nikon D5200 18-55 DX VR II + 55-300 DX VR
2. Nikon D5300 18-105 DX VR
I would like to know which one to get and why.
Thank You in advance
Branko

Welcome to the forum Branko.

For me the GPS and wifi offered by the d5300 are not worth the extra money. However if you find a d5300 for only a small bit more expensive than the d5200 it may be worth it, both are great.

Personally I prefer the 18-105 lens as it is a very flexible lens. I'd even try and get the d5200 with 18-105 and 55-300 if again cost was similar. I do know that you are doubling up on your 55-105 range if you buy both these lenses, but many times when I had the 18-55 I wanted more reach, but more often than not the 18-105 serves most purposes unless I specifically need a telephoto.

With a 18-105 you may find you carry one lens more often than 2

Well, IMHO:

- WiFi is a great option. Backup your images, remote control the camera. For example one guy I've seen in the internet uses a monopod and the gps to hover the camera far above him, in order to get unusual angles.

- But GPS is just a battery drain, not much else.

- The 55-300mm VR is nothing I would get, like, ever. You pay a lot extra just for a bit more telephoto, but not much else. My choice would thus be either the 55-200mm VR (which is a lot cheaper, but optically just as good) or the 70-300mm VR (which, finally, offers fast enough autofocus speed for sports, and is also a pretty good FX lens to boot, if you ever wanted to go full frame).

- About 18-55mm vs 18-105mm: Not that important. The 18-55mm gives you a bit more macro (but at the wide end), the 18-105mm gives you more telephoto. But both lenses are only really good in the range 24-50mm when stopped down to f/8. All in all I got my 35mm f1.8 DX back then, which is pretty useable even wide open, and I hardly ever used the 18-55mm at all, ever, again.
