I have a D90 for which I want to get a wide angle lens. However, I may want to trade up to the D800 in the near future. Thus I was thinking of getting the Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR Af-S lens. My understanding is that this will work with the D90 and then, if I upgrade, be a good match for the D800?

It won't be much wider than a 18-55/70/105/200.

Will the 16-35 mm give a good wide angle when put on the D800? (Maybe I will move up my timetable)

Wider than it will on a DX body.

  • Maximum Angle of View (DX-format)
    83°
  • Maximum Angle of View (FX-format)
    107°

ultrawide is one area where fx and dx dont mix very well. I suggest buying a used dx ultrawide and then selling it if/when u upgrade to fx.

I am running a 14-24 2.8 as my wide angle lens on my D90. Great lens, but it's not that wide on the D90. It will work better once I get my D800 :)

Well, if you don't mind using the DX mode on D800, problem solved!

Say you get the Tokina 11-16 F2.8. It will be perfect for the D90.
When you are using the D800 in FX, it will work fine at 16mm, which is still plenty wide! (my widest is 20mm on D700).
Then if you want zoom, you can turn it to DX mode and still get 15mp worth of picture.

My initial question is soon to be academic. I preordered a Nikon D800. Now I just need to decided on FX lenses. I preordered a Nikon zoom 38-300??-can't remember the lower range exactly. Have not decided yet on a wide angle which I definitely will get.
