I'll admit that it doesn't really do much for me. I would suggest a very shallow depth of field (like in the last one) and some harsh light, or upping the contrast.

I disagree. While the composition is a bit run-of-the-mill, the super contrasty super shallow DOF flower shots are soooooooo overdone.

the DOF in the last one wasnt that great in my opinion because everything else was so close to being in focus that it made it look like it was just mostly out of focus and the focal point got lost in that for me

The first and last were fantastic. But in my own opinion, I think those pictures look better in sepia rather than b&w.
