I'm looking into purchasing a Nikon D80 (though the D50, 400D, and k100D are also on my list). I've poured over reviews, and I'm fairly content that any of these cameras will produce the results I want if used correctly. I've seen pictures taken by D80's and 400D's. They are exceptional in terms of detail. My 3 MP point and shoot was usually enough, so these 10 MP will be far beyond my needs.
The question comes, then. If I purchase a D80, and keep it in working order, will it ever become obsolete? I know that there will be better cameras each year, but haven't we passed the threshhold where digitals were worlds below film in resolution and clarity? I think I've read somewhere that film tends to be between 10 and 30 MP's. That may be wrong, but what more can be done to the D80, lets say, to make it completely obsolete. It's Instant start up and the super-fast frame-to-frame speed will probably never ever hold me back, even if I were to become a professional (although I understand sports photography needs blazing speeds). So, couldn't I say that buying a D80 body is a long term investment as long as I don't go beyond being a hobbyist?
