This use of body caps to mount things (pringles tubes, plungers etc) seems quite reasonable and sturdy. For someone willing to put up with manual focusing / aperture control I imagine you could buy some quite nice old lenses off e-bay and fit them to a body cap without too much work.

Hmmm, hello cheap macro / wide angle lenses?
