Do Gray Scale photos help show imperfections in silver finished metal?

Thanks for any of your time with my beginner question.

I am looking at purchasing a metal craft online. The seller is showing me photos of the metal in gray scale photos. He claims that by doing Gray Scale it will better show any imperfections that the metal craft might have.

Is this true? Or is this maybe a way to help not show as much detail so I miss some imperfections?

If it was me... I would ask for high-resolution color photos and then do the B/W conversion myself and look at it both ways. If you have Photoshop you could do some levels adjusting and that could potentially expose any imperfections. I know people who are into buying vinyl records online that use this technique to look for scratches and damage to the vinyl that doesn't always show from the original photo.
