The vintage type of distortion or coloured light bleaching effect is what I am curious about. Is this something that can be done with some kind of photoshop trickery or is this something that is done at the time of exposure? Is there a term for this kind of "cross processing anomaly" effect?

I have come across this tutorial with a particular set of steps that achieve's something similar therein:

However, it looks a bit more digital and the gradient effect appears to be more "uniform" than some examples I have seen, such as the ones above and in a few magazines here and there.

Not sure how to get that overlay but if I did get it, I would be sure to send my camera in to a certified Canon repair shop to have my camera fixed!

This is just a guess but its probably a Photoshop thing more than a camera trick.

it is a photoshop overlay thing. u could just take a pic of well anything...fire, a window w light streaming through then play w the colors then just overlay that onto your other pic... like you would a texture....same effect.

If it was as easy as just throwing "something" on a new layer and messing with overlay modes I would have been able to achieve comparable results by now, but no go just yet.

It looks as though he just used the paint brush with soft edges and lowered the density. Then on another layer used the dodge tool to add light behind it one stop at a time. Just a guess.
