Does it makes sense adding 17-85IS or EF 50 to the stable?

Appreciate if someone can share some light on the two lenses I've been offer to buy.

Currently I have 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 and EF-m100/f2.8.

Does it makes sense for me to get either 17-85 and/or 50?

I want to shoot indoor portrait, newborn, and regular family activities. Occasionally I wish to blow the picture to 16x20 for personal enjoyment.

Thank you in advance for all suggestions.

Oh, almost forgot, I plan to match these lens with 50D.

me personally, id get it because when you are indoor, you never know you might that extra wide angle for shots.

Thanks CNCO,
But which one or both?
And if possible can you tell me what is a fair price those lenses?
So far I think the 17-85 is around $350 and the 50mm is $150ish.

Many thanks

I love my ef 50mm 1.2 L

I For me it is one of the best choices for portraits. I was also lucky to borrow a friends 85mm and it was very good as well for that type of shoot.

I say get the 50mm f1.4 the 17-85 overlaps your other lens quite a bit. Plus the 50mm is super sharp.

Ideally, I'd suggest the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS...but that is quite a bit more expensive.

You didn't mention which 50mm lens you are considering. There is the 50mm F1.8 ($100), the 50mm F1.4 ($350) and the 50mm F1.2 L ($1350).

I think that your 'stable' is missing a wide lens. Only having 28mm as your widest option...would be terribly restricting IMO. Especially for shooting indoors etc. I think you would be really pleased to shoot with a lens that can go as wide as 17mm.

Thanks for all the great inputs. I got the 50d body and now will search for a nice wide angle lens or perhaps looking into the 17-50/2.8 by tamron.

There you go....Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8--that will give you a true wide-angle zoom, without breaking the bank. 28mm on 1.6x feels awfully cramped and limiting. Canon's new 15-85mm is said to be quite a step up,optically, from the 17-85mm.
