the sky was that ugly grey color and so it was really hard to get the iso / shutter right to even capture the birds very well to begin with. but im wondering what i should change in the future for that type of picture.

Maby zooming a little bit closer to the birds, so they are still on the one third lines but you get rid of a little bit of the "ugly gray".
