DX trinity...

@mjhoward
How are the tokinas in comparison to Nikon glass? The IQ? I just may have to forsake the Nikon glass for these three.

If you are talking about the Nikon Holy Trinity there is only THE THREE....

14-24mm f/2.8
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8

and although these are FF lenses, they are still the Holy Trinity from Nikon, whether you are using them for DX or FX.

But if you are looking for a more affordable range of lenses than the Holy Trinity, these IMHO are the Nikon Lenses to go for,

12-24mm f/4
16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 VRII
70-300mm f3/.5-5.6 VRII

A cheaper alternative to the 16-85 f/3.5-5.6 VRII is the 18-70 f/3.5-4.5, but only can be purchase used now.
And the 70-300 f3/.5-5.6 VRII is still super sharp at 300mm much to what some may say...

D300, 70-300vrII @ 300mm, 1/400 sec, f/11, EV 0.0, ISO 200

So whats a good wide angle zoom or not. That will work well on fx also. I really like the tokina 11-16 2.8 but its really a dx lens. I dont want to spend the big money on a 14-24. I would like to keep it under $1000 also doesnt have to be a zoom or 2.8, but i want it to work on a full frame without major distortion or vinetting

I guess with the Nikon lineup of dx lenses, I was wondering if there were 3 that did everything. Right now, I can only think of the 10-24, 17-55, and 55-300. The problem is that the 55-300 ain't that great, the 10-24 ain't that fast and the 17-55's bokeh sucks unless it is zoomed out. Nothing is really geared at the "pro" that uses a d300s or d7000.

And yes... There are pros who use aps-c.

Screw the trinity! J/k of course, but...

nikkor 24mm f.14 af-s
nikkor 35mm f1.4 af-s/ais
nikkor 50mm f1.2 ais
nikkor 85mm f1.4 af-s/af-d/ais
nikkor 135mm f2 defocus
nikkor 200 f2 af-s/ais
nikkor 300mm f2 ais

And yes... There are pros who use aps-c.

Until 4 years ago when the D3 was introduced, we had no Nikon choice but to shoot DX.

Surprisingly, that is when I started looking for lens wider than the 28-70 and bought my 14-24 Nikkor.

About that time, I also bought a 12-24 for my D90.
I have since replaced it with the 10-24 to use with my D5100 for Trips, Hikes, and Landscapes.
I mostly use the 28-300 on my D7000 at Events
and 35mm f/1.8 for Movies

Just check out the flickr 'channels' for each lens... then you be the judge :)

Comapare the above with:

Flickr: Nikon AF 24-85mm f2.8-4D IF
Flickr: Nikon 80-200mm f2.8

You'll notice that there are some excellent photos by both Tokina and Nikon version and there are also some not so excellent by both Tokina and Nikon versions. Point is, they are capable of taking excellent photos.

Yeah i love the 11-16 tokina, i ran into a guy using it on a d300s when i was out of town, if i was staying dx i would be all over it. For around $550 its a bargin. Maybe i should stay dx, i dont know...i know i will be keeping my d5100 though, its a nice little camera as a backup or lightweight.

Tokina 11-16mm
Sigma 17-50mm
Nikon 70-300mm

No big compromise in quality while being affordable.
