I love to take videos, and group pictures. I own The 60D with 50 mm 1.4 Prime lens, but I feel limited when taking group pictures in tight places, and recording dance videos in close rooms. I'm not sure which one I should go for EF 17-40mm f/4L or EF 28mm f/1.8 Prime? or something with-in the price range of the two

I have the 17-40 4L on my 60d and am very happy with the results. Its a bit heavier, but it has the "L" build quality. I have only used it once for video and it worked fine. I have never used the 28 1.8 though.

I would say go with the fast lens as you will most likely be in situations where better low light handling will the necessity. Just my 2 cents.

If the 28mm range is even wide enough for you as it's on a crop frame. Maybe look into ultra wide fast lens like Tokina 11-16 2.8.

Fine point with the lighting, i neglected to think that the recording will be done indoors. The 17-40 is great outdoors, the 28 will have a leg up on the 17-40 indoors though.
