Effect with Lights?

Hey, I've seen some great photographs, when the subject is still, but lights around it are spinning, for the lights spinning part, I guess they set a slow shutter speed, and draw the shape you want with the camera. but how do you make the subject sit still while still having the lights draw the shape you want?

You wouldn't need the subject to sit still for that long really.
I mean if it's fairly dark and you shoot with a small aperture, then you could probably record light trails without it exposing enough to bring out alot of details in the actual subject and then fire a flash, which will freeze the subject.
You might want to do it the other way around with the flash at the start... experiment
