Epson 1400 question

Question for anyone with this model printer of similar, when do you replace the ink cartridge? Mine is telling me the ink needs to be replaced soon, and the level shows about 1/8 of a tank left. The printer is new for me, so it's my first set of cartridges. Do you wait till it won't print properly anymore, or do you usually change it a bit sooner so the system doesn't need to prime itself?

I own an Epson R320 and when the ink is showing as low I just keep going until it's out. I just make sure I have spares at that point. IIRC you get a warning and you can keep printing for a while, then when the ink gets really low the printer actually refuses to print.

The only exception is if I am printing something important, say a full colour A4 photo where the paper is worth more than an 1/10th of an ink cartridge that I might save.
