Events Photography and finding events

Hello everyone,

I've got a couple of 'things' coming up soon, one is a friends wedding and the other is an event in Nottingham (a local music festival thing).

Anyway, what I want to do is get experience at events photography and stuff, but, and this is the really daft part, I don't really know how to find out what events are happening and whether people are happy for others to take cameras.

Do people have a specific way of finding events, or is it just by word of mouth? Any other ideas for practising this type of photography would be useful as well!

Tourist information offices are really good for info. After that, it's the web really. Anyone else have an idea?

Any particular websites? I have found a couple that claim to be event listings, but they're usually pretty sparse
