There is a shabby looking tree in the ground of a church on my local high street. The exposed roots look kind of sinster. I've 'shopped it a bit to lend it more of an oppresive feel.

Very sinister indeed. I like it. The ring adds something too it definetly.

Sure.

-saturation (can't remember how much).
Burn tool and brush tool for the edges.
Marquee the church, copy/paste/transform & flip horizontally.
Then I used the eraser tool to blend it to the grass and tree.

I thought duping the church made it feel more 'closed in' and gave it a more eerie feeling.

Cheers,

Mohain.

This reminds me of the Czech fable, OTIK. Maybe this is the grandfather! A great shot!

Right on.. what a cool tree(your right Airic) Wish this was in my front lawn.

Nice!! I really like it. The tree does indeed look to be from Harry Potter, or Sleepy Hollow. I also agree that duping the background is very effective, now you feel enclosed in a wall. The same effect is emphasized even further by the vignetting you added, which I think is totally appropriate here. I really like this horizontal shape of the whole composition as well. Nice job!
