Exposure compensation question

Doesn't do anything while in full manual as far as I know.
On Nikon cameras, setting an exposure compensation value biases the exposure meter.
Adjust the EC while looking in the camera viewfinder at the meter.

Oh yeah that's right.
I actually knew that... xD

... both the shutter speed and the aperture were rings on the lens (not on the camera body). The two rings could be interlocked. On one area of the rings it had the Av & Tv settings, but if you followed around to the other side of the rings you'd see the Ev values. You could meter the "Ev" values of a scene, interlock the rings at that Ev value, and then every setting on the camera would still produce a correct exposure.

The lens on my Rolleiflex had the same feature. The selenium cell light meter I had only gave indications in EV values. The two worked really well together. Film speed was accounted for at the light meter by the simple solution of moving the scale under the indicator needle. A lot can be said for learning the technical aspects of photography with old stuff. The basics of creating a properly exposed image have not changed with the advent of new fangled digital gizmos.

Agree, can you imagine how many posts this forum would lack if these were to be printed small, laminated in plastic and kept in the camera bag.

Huh.

If anyone wants the above chart on a small, printed and laminated card small enough to fit in your camera bag, please send me $13.95 and your mailing address.

For those who want to relate EV values to actual conditions, this link has a good table (table 2) that does that. Exposure value - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's called "scene modes." As Patrice noted, "The basics of creating a properly exposed image have not changed..."
