I don't know how to do it with film... That's a completely foreign land to me... Might as well be speaking German... oh ... wait.....

With DSLR's, its as easy as setting up the composition, focusing, putting on the filter, then bracketing the crap out of the shot (usually long exposures -- 10-20 seconds typically) so that you can hopefully find one that was exposed correctly.
