As far as getting an faux HDR image with a single photo, I have had decent results in Lightroom with the highlight, shadows, and clarity sliders. However they still don't look quite as good as some other false HDR images I have seen. If I post a link to one of mine, and than to what I am trying to achieve can you give me some tips/ideas to improve it?

Someones that I think looks great:

I'm pretty sure thats just considered crossprocess. Hdr has a deep depth of field. try a higher aperture next time. better looking "faux HDR".

Yours looks better.

These are not cross processed.

I'm going to go with tonemapped.

ETA: Here's what a cross processed photo looks like:

Why not just shoot HDR instead of this?

I agree with The Barbarian. Your photo looks better.
And can you please PM me explaining your worflow to achieve that effect?

I also think that the American bulldog photo is a tonemapped with maybe some sharpening and color fill layers to change some colors.. But I don't know for sure. Have you tried to contact the uploader of that photo on flickr and ask him to explain his worflow?
