I'm using a shoot-through with an sb700. After reading lots of avoids hot spots and taking advantage of how the light feathers, I want to get some objective results. I want to create a shot that shows the spread when I change the power (1/4 or 1/128) and when I change the distance between the flash and the umbrella.

Suggestions?.... or am I barking up the wrong tree.

Yes, I'm looking for advice on determining this with my setup. I received advice that the shoot though was too close and pointed directly at the subject causing hot spots. The links I was pointed to gave specific advice assuming I knew how the light feathered. In trying shots last night, this proved harder than it seemed. Hence my question about a good way to test this.

As a noob myself,I'm going to give you some friendly and valuable advice.
Keep testing.
I'm a voracious reader and absorb information like a mofo, but it's all useless until I try it all out.
Charge all the batteries ya got,and beat your equipment like a rented mule until you start getting things the way you like them.
And learn from ALL of your mistakes.
