This spot in Kauai a lovely waterfall meets the ocean. This area of the coast by Queen's bath has caused many fatalities (not necessarily this specific location, but in the general area). The number is up to 12 just this year alone.

Knowing this, it had me extra cautious. I knew I wanted this comp, but wasn't worth becoming fish food. So I decided to personally scout the location on two separate days prior, watched the patterns of the wave break, and finally determined it was safe to go down in the narrow to shoot behind the falls. The feeling being down there when a big wave was rolling in was disconcerting to say the least. I kept my distance, stayed dry, and hopefully brought a unique comp to this location.

This is a pretty neat shot. It's 'different', and has a nice sunrise/sunset type of feeling.

Derrel, thanks a lot. This was a sunset. I shot about 15 frames and really liked the water action over the rocks in this one.

I love this shot.

This information might have been more helpful to you while you were there, but felt soled tabi shoes are so the way forward for walking on wet rocks. Of course they do make you look like a goat-man (or in my case goat-squirrel). Felt Sole Tabi (Size 27.0cm; US Men 9.5, US Women 10) : Amazon.com : Sports & Outdoors

I'm looking forward to seeing more from your trip!

Wow no kidding about the goat thing. I have worn felt-soled shoes in creeks before. But never ones that look as strange as this. THanks for the link.

Wait you mean I didn't have to look like a goat?! Oh man!

The strength of this photograph is the exposure and how well it accentuates the waterfall.

Henry Peach Robinson would be proud of you! Well done, very classical.

Thanks everyone.

Had to look that name up, had never heard of him before. This shot was maybe the single biggest pain-in-the-rear exposure blend I've ever done.

This one is very nice. I love this type of lighting and the sun flare adds so much to the shot.

Here are some modest suggestions which I feel improve this already excellent picture. Your opinion may, of course, differ ;)

I darkened the large dark rock on the left, and brightened around it, to create a more prominent "dark spot" to balance the sun better, and then I cropped a little to push things around a little, and break up the strictish 1/3:1/3:1/3 symmetry of the original.

I have been to this place though admittedly, not from the same perspective as you. I think the day before we all went there some kid got sucked out over the rocks and mashed up like a grape. But a nice shot nonetheless.

Well that's a bit morbid. But exactly why I was extremely cautious getting this shot
